What to Look for in a Photographer According to a Social Media Influencer

Who run the world? Bloggers.

More specifically, this one.

As social media influencers become the new A-listers, it's important we all do as our momma told us ("you have one mouth and two ears for a reason") and listen. Over the past several months, I have had the honor of photographing Bev Adams for her 7k+ fans on her social media accounts. Sometimes I have people give me some serious side eyes when I tell them I photograph for social media influencers. I can tell you how vital it is to have a cohesive social media voice and imagery all day long but instead, I thought you'd like to hear it straight from the beauty with brains behind the blog.

When looking for a photographer, what are a couple of tips/tricks that stick out most to you?

The biggest thing I have learned when looking for a photographer is being able to find someone who has a good eye for fashion and is a good listener. I always look for a photographer who not only does great work but has also worked with other bloggers. Working with a photographer who gives me directions during shoots also helps so much. With Instagram and my blog, one should be able to work with photographers that specialize in capturing images that work on all platforms. I not only look for a photographer who does great work, but also someone who I can be comfortable around. Having fun during shoots is important, however, it is also important to work with a photographer with whom you can still manage to maintain a level of professionalism.

How has using a photographer helped your blog/social media grow?

My following on Instagram has almost doubled since I started working with Emma Parker’s Photography. I have worked with professional photographers in the past but had not seen much growth. My blog page views have gone up as well and I have started to get brand collaborations, paid brand collaborations. I would love to take credit, however, most of the credit goes to Emma, who is the creative behind the camera.

What steps do you take to plan your shoot? Does the photographer normally help in planning?

When I am planning a shoot, I usually do a lot of research online for fashion trends. I then go through my closet to see what pieces I own that are on-trend for the season and then purchase some new items to complement my style. I try to mix old and new pieces because, let’s face it, not every person has the money to buy new clothes each week. Since I like to take my pictures outside, I always get help from the photographer in picking a location that goes with my brand’s aesthetic.

Is using a photographer worth the investment?

In the two years that I have been blogging, having a professional photographer has been worth the investment. A lot of brands looking to collaborate with bloggers are looking for high quality pictures.

So there you have it! Straight from Beverly herself, a local Columbus blogger who is kicking butt and taking names in the fashion industry. For more on what to look for in your next photographer, read 5 Things You Should Know Before Booking Your Photographer.
